Andrea Nemtin
Executive Producer
After several years as a freelance producer, Andrea became a Partner and Executive Producer at Toronto’s PTV Productions Inc., in 1997. Under her guidance, PTV has produced over 60 hours of television. Andrea has produced and executive-produced one-offs, limited series and series, and has worked on international co-productions with Europe and the UK. Andrea’s recent successes include the multi award-winning feature documentary Passage, and a biography on the Aga Khan. She also recently executive produced Star Portraits Canada, restoration series Saving Places for History Television, as well as Inside Disaster for TVO and ITV.
Andrea is a Director of the Abilities Arts Festival, and has been a board member of both Hot Docs and Documentary Organization of Canada and is currently a member of the CFTPA, WIFT and the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
Ian Dunbar
Executive Producer
As co-owner of PTV Productions, Ian executive produces all of PTV’s projects. As Director of Creative Services, Ian is responsible for maintaining the high standard of design implementation for all PTV Productions. In addition to editing and visual effects, Ian is an experienced online supervisor and has directed two series for television: children’s animated series Grandpa’s Garden and the documentary series Letters to God.
Katie McKenna
Interactive Producer
PTV Productions’ Internet Director Katie McKenna has more than a decade of experience producing and directing non-fiction content for film, television, and the web. Specializing in 2.0. tools and open distribution strategies, she’s produced web sites and campaigns from the corporate trenches of JumpTV to the non-profit frontlines of the NDP, FreePress, and the Documentary Organization of Canada.
In 2009, she completed her MSc with Distinction from the London School of Economics, including coursework in Complex Emergencies and Managing Humanitarianism. In addition to Producing Inside Disaster.com, Katie also served as Project Manager and Writer for the website content.
Spencer Saunders
Technical Lead
Spencer comes from a diverse background that includes a variety of new media endeavours, including production and post-production in both film and television, photography, and print design for both corporate and non-profit clientele. He has shown his film and video work throughout Canada, and has facilitated workshops on video production & post-production as well as all aspects of web development from coding to design.
After graduating with a BFA in New Media from Ryerson in 2001, he focused his efforts on developing content management and promotional tools for Canada’s marketing and advertising industry. High profile clients include Coke, Rogers, GM, Hbc, Loblaw Companies Limited, Deloitte and GlaxoSmithKline.
With his “partner in crime”, Kirk Clyne, Spencer continues to service a variety of industries while attending OCAD University as a candidate in the inaugural Masters of Design in Strategic Foresight and Innovation.
Kirk Clyne
Creative Lead
Kirk Clyne has over fifteen years of experience as a digital media artist and designer, and over 10 years of experience as a college and university instructor of computer-related design courses. The focus of his commercial work has ranged from the development of “experimental” user-interface prototypes, to e-learning and straight-up marketing and promotional sites. A veteran of the Bay Area dot-com boom and bust, Kirk launched the first version of his personal website back in 1995 (when the web was still in short pants). Throughout his career, Kirk’s work has regularly earned him awards from such organizations as Applied Arts, Apple, Communication Arts, iD Magazine and the FlashForward Film Festival.
Nicolas Jolliet
Field Director, Videographer & Blogger, Inside Disaster.com
Director, Cinematographer, Editor & Composer, Inside the Haiti Earthquake
Nicolas Jolliet has spent the past twenty years traveling and hunting for pictures, sounds and stories. Whether searching for the best Oud maker in Kurdistan, following the Guerimperos (illegal gold miners of the Amazon) or filming the rat eating tribes on the Nilgiri hills in India, Nico thrives on telling stories from the most fascinating places in the world. An accomplished filmmaker, photographer and writer, Nico made his first feature documentary, Harvest, in the Caribbean. His latest film, Aluku Liba, which he filmed in French Guiana, will premiere in festivals this fall.
Nicolas spent a month in Haiti following the earthquake, where he directed, shot and edited 29 mini-documentaries and hundreds of photos for Inside Disaster.com. His footage was featured on CBC, CTV, Global, and CityTV news, as well as dozens on online news sources, and his photographs are featured throughout this website. Nicolas returned to Haiti in August 2010 to shoot footage and record music and narration for Inside the Haiti Earthquake (IHE). In addition to his work as Director and Editor for IHE, Nicolas composed the original soundtrack for the piece and served as Music Supervisor.
Michael Gibson
Writer/ Director, Inside the Haiti Earthquake
Michael Gibson studied architecture and then made several award-winning films including the feature Defy Gravity with RH Thomson, When Edgar Returns, The Bellringer and the documentary series, My Canada Includes Quebec before co-founding Zapdramatic with negotiation experts Allan Stitt and Frank Handy. Zapdramatic produces serious games and simulations for entertainment and life skills development. Zapdramatic is a winner of the Canadian New Media Award for Excellence in Learning (Professionalism and Ethics Simulation) and the Vortex prize at the McLuhan International Festival of the Future (Move or Die). In 2009 Zapdramatic was named an Official Honoree at the Webby Awards for the anti-bullying game, Sir Basel Pike Public School. Michael Gibson presented his structural approach to writing an interactive documentary at the third International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling in Edinburgh, Scotland in November 2010.
Nicole Chung
Lead Developer, Inside the Haiti Earthquake
Nicole Chung has ten years of experience as a front-end developer for clients such as Ford Canada and BMO Financial Group. Her specialties include content management system integration and rich media development. Her recent projects for PTV include programming the new PTV Productions website, the Star Portraits Season 2 website, and the Phase I website for Inside Disaster. In addition to her new media work, Nicole has also written, directed and produced several short films and videos. Her art has been funded by the Canada Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto Arts Council and the National Film Board of Canada. As such, she has a passion for creating multi-platform experiences that emphasize user interaction.
Peter Henderson
Graphic Designer, Inside the Haiti Earthquake
Peter Henderson is an established designer, programmer and music enthusiast that has collaborated with a diverse range of clients from high profile corporations to independent filmmakers and musicians. His past work includes designs for Bell Canada’s 2010 Olympic presence in Vancouver, including work on the Bell Ice Cube pavilion (with Zulu Alpha Kilo and Fireworks.) Peter’s flexibility as a designer in multiple platforms has allowed him to win awards for designs with “RGD: Design at Work” and “Applied Arts” magazine. He has a BFA from Ryerson University and a BDES with distinction from the Ontario College of Art and Design.
Kyla Reid
Lead Researcher, Inside Disaster.com
InsideDisaster.com Lead Researcher Kyla Reid is a recent graduate of the London School of Economics, MSc. Development Management and holds a BA (Hons.) from Dalhousie University. Kyla currently works as a freelance consultant, writer and researcher for NGOs, think tanks and academic institutions. She’s worked in various capacities for Toronto-based HIV/AIDS organizations OHAfrica and the Casey House Foundation, interned at the Crisis States Research Center, a policy and research think-tank that explores failed and fragile states based at the London School of Economics, and consulted for the Overseas Development Institute, London, as part of an LSE Research Team.
Kyla was a research assistant on Neglected Tropical Diseases in North-West Uganda, and is a contributor to A Dictionary of Humanitarianism (forthcoming, Routledge 2010). Kyla has travelled extensively in South-East Asia and East Africa, and recently conducted fieldwork in Northern Uganda for her Masters thesis, which explored the intersection between witchcraft, healing and justice. Her work received a mark of distinction and will be published as an article co-authored with Prof. Tim Allen (LSE) in the Journal of East African Studies Special Issues in the Spring of 2010.
Lyndsey Westfall
Social Media & Marketing Lead, Inside Disaster.com
Lyndsey previously worked at Hamilton-Mehta Productions, owned by Deepa Mehta, overseeing social media marketing initiatives. After launching Adrift Skate Shop, she went on to a marketing position at MySpace Canada where she devised promotional plans for large companies and increased brand awareness by working with niche businesses across Canada. In addition, Lyndsey also designed and project managed an online promotional photo contest called First Photos for Push.ca/MSN, incorporating an integrated approach of online and offline tactics that generated viral content.
Claire-Helene Heese-Boutin
Haiti Researcher, Inside Disaster.com
Torontonian of half-Haitian and half-Mennonite descent, Claire has been studying Haitian history and issues for over ten years. She is currently completing an HBa at the University of Toronto in Caribbean Studies and Environmental Studies.
Emmanuel Midi
Field Reporter, Inside Disaster & Haiti Today
Emmanuel Midi is a journalist and professional fixer, based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Since February 2010, he has been a regular blogger and correspondent for the Inside Disaster blog, Haiti Today, reporting on Haiti’s reconstruction from the perspective of everyday citizens. Through his business, Haiti Fixers, Emmanuel also provided drivers, security and interpretation for the Inside Disaster web and documentary crews during their work in Haiti.
Before the January earthquake, Emmanuel studied post-secondary web and graphic design. He volunteers with and is a founding member of FAD Haiti, a local community development organization run for and by Haitian youth.
Lucas Ng
New Media Assistant, Inside the Haiti Earthquake
Lucas is currently enrolled at the University of Toronto completing his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Neuroscience. Apart from his studies, Lucas has a passion and reverence for fine arts and new technology. As a new media assistant for PTV Productions, his main goal in contributing to the Inside the Haiti Earthquake interactive was to ensure that users felt an overall sense of understanding and compassion for the people suffering in Haiti.
Sarah Greene
Copy Editor & Fact-checker, Inside Disaster.com
Sarah Greene is a writer and editor based in Toronto. She has worked on U of T’s Lexicons of Early Modern English and Representative Poetry Online websites, transcribed for television and documentaries, hosted a music program on CIUT 89.5 FM, and freelanced for CBC and Sirius Satellite Canada. Her articles and reviews have appeared in Now Magazine, The Coast, This and Broken Pencil.
Colin Murray
Production Artist
Colin is a recent graduate of the Interactive Digital Media program at Centennial College, and holds a Bachelor of Music from McGill University. He is an active professional trombonist in Toronto and plays in a wide variety of performing situations with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Paul Anka and Johnny Mathis. He is member of the faculty at the Humber College Music Department and got into the web business because no one needs trombone players anymore. His extensive experience in the musical instrument business makes him a sought-after consultant in that field. In other words, he’s a geek.
